Introduction
Signing the Membership Book and being welcomed into our congregation as a Member is a significant milestone representing a two-way commitment between you and the Unitarian Universalist Church in Livermore (UUCiL).
Responsibilities of UUCiL
We have a responsibility to see that you are made welcome and that you find a place in our midst where you can make friends and continue your spiritual journey. UUCiL also offers these privileges of membership:
- Participating in the decision making process of the church through voting in church business meetings.
- After a year, eligibility for election to the church Board of Trustees.
- Access to publications, conferences and other resources of the national Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) and the Pacific Central District of the UUA.
- The right to call on the minister for consultations and ceremonies without a fee.
- Free use of church facilities for rites of passage.
Responsibilities of the Member
Although there is no "creedal" test for it, membership indicates that you are in sympathy with Unitarian Universalist principles, and that you will become involved in the church in ways that are meaningful to you. Specific responsibilities of membership include:
- Participation - Attend Sunday services and join small groups or committees (see: "A Sampler of Activities at UUCiL").
- Financial Support - Make an annual financial pledge in support of the church operating budget and its programs.
- Learning and Growth - Our community grows stronger as each person's religious life and knowledge of UU traditions deepens.
- Right Relationship - Living out the UU principle of the inherent worth and dignity of every person in our relationships with one another both here and in the outside community.
First Steps
Before becoming a member, we recommend that you attend several Sunday services and participate in other church activities and groups to gain an understanding of the community. An orientation series will be offered twice a year, and information is always avalable after church at the Connections Center.
Joining Process:
- Contact the minister or a member of the membership committee to indicate your interest.
- Attend a class for newcomers that is designed to increase your understanding of Unitarian Universalism and help you get acquainted with other newcomers..
- Schedule an appointment with the minister who will explain the responsibilities and privileges of membership.
- Sign the membership book. This can be done during your meeting with the minister, after a class for newcomers, or on the day of your welcoming ceremony.
- Make a financial pledge to the church.
- Write a short biography for inclusion in our newsletter and use at the welcoming ceremony in order to introduce you to the members..
Welcoming Ceremony
New members are strongly encouraged to participate in a New Members Recognition Ceremony, held during a Sunday Service several times a year. This provides an opportunity for you to get better acquainted with other members.
